Competence assessments

We are uniquely experienced in the design and facilitation of assessment centres for programme and project managers. We have designed and facilitated two different approaches for assessment centres as follows:

One approach: Assessing Conceptions of PPM Work, is based on a competence framework grounded in academic work undertaken by Sergio Pellegrinelli and colleagues at Cranfield School of Management.  The research uncovered four qualitatively different conceptions - how individuals comprehend, make sense of and perform work.  These conceptions form a hierarchy of performance.  The competence framework has been the basis of assessment centres we have facilitated for a variety of major organisations since 2003.  Results are used for development purposes, and for selection and deployment of people to work they are suited to deliver.

Another approach: Assessment Practitioner Capability, is based on work done by Ruth Murray-Webster and Peter Simon for the UK Association of Project Management (APM) to award Practitioner Qualification (IPMA level C).  Many hundreds of people have undertaken assessment using this approach through APM since 2004.  Our learning from building the APM qualification has been used to build bepoke assessment and development centres for other organisations.

Most recently we have built a hybrid design of the two approaches above so that assessment and development centres provide insights into how managers think and act in relation to their work as well as gauging practical skills in the performance of core activities of the role.
